| Founded in 1934, the Newport & District Metallurgical Society, other than for a
break during the years of World War 2, has been active continuously since that time.
It was one of the first to be affiliated to the (then) Iron and Steel Institute and
continues to be very actively involved in the affairs of The Institute of Materials, Minerals
and Mining, both at local and national level. |
 |
In 2003, the society changed its name to
"Newport and District Materials Society" to reflect the
increasingly diverse range of materials based industry located in the
area.
The society caters for the materials profession in its widest meaning
but with the massive steel oriented population in the Newport area there remains a strong
steel influence. The programme of activities spans from October to May each year and
contains a variety of events tailored to the Professional Development needs of the active
members. Joint meetings are also held with other materials groups such as The South
Wales Polymer Group and both the Ebbw Vale and South Wales Metallurgical Societies.
The South Wales Organisations between them host two prestige lectures each year; one
academic, The Vivian Memorial Lecture, and one industrial, The Sidney Gilchrist Thomas
Lecture.
Non members are very welcome to attend the meetings of the society.
